Park Baltimore in Ashkelon, Israel

Israel’s public spaces are among the loveliest in the world — and Baltimore Park in Ashkelon is one of those beautifully maintained public spaces you’d want to visit if you have the chance. This park is one of those often-overlooked areas you might want to seek out if you are interested in avoiding tourist traps and, instead, finding spots that are frequented by the locals. As far as I can tell, masses of tourists really aren’t going to Baltimore Park. Yet, there are bunches of reasons you might want to go out of your way to see this particular space:

  • View an impressive mosaic exhibition curated by a world-famous mosaic artist, the late Ilana Shafir. These mosaics were created and contributed by a bunch of talented artists. The mosaic art is what really distinguishes Baltimore Park from other parks in Israel and around the world. It’s sort of a hybrid between a park and a museum-quality art exhibit.
  • You can take your kids to play at the well-equipped playground. There are the usual swings and jungle gyms plus a unique game area too.
  • Park Baltimore offers visitors a child's playground and game area. The game area is surrounded by benches that are covered in colorful, fascinating mosaic art.

  • Get a free workout using gym equipment that is cleverly designed to use your own body weight as the resistance.
  • It’s a scenic place to take a walk, and there are many convenient park benches where you can relax and sit down if you get hot, thirsty or tired (make sure you bring a water bottle with you).

Israelis take a national day off, known as “Shabbat”, and this park is a lovely place to spend that day. Families sometimes come to the park to enjoy picnics and relaxation time. They spread blankets under the park’s many trees and have a snack together while the children play an impromptu game of paddleboard, frisbee or catch.

Conclusion

If you’re a mosaic art connoisseur or enthusiast, Ashkelon’s Baltimore Park is definitely worth a visit. If you’re an Instagrammer who’s looking for unique places to feature in your feed, I’d rate this place high on the list of destinations to seek out. There are some amazing spots for taking selfies in this park. Otherwise, I think this is a great park, but I wouldn’t rate it as “must see” unless you’re planning to spend time in Ashkelon anyway.
